’16 Season Preview: Gravette Lions

The Gravette Lions have improved every season on the win total since 2013. Coach Bill Harrelson and his Lions come into the 2016 season wanting to continue to build upon the success from last season. The Lions will not have many returning starters from last season coming back, with only eight returning. Three starters return on offense and five starters return on the defensive side of the ball for the Lions. Coach Bill Harrelson and the Lions have proven more than once that underestimating them is a big mistake.

Gravette may not have many returning starters on the offensive side of the ball but that does not mean they are without talent. The offensive line is senior left tackle Nelson Payne, who at 6’3” 352 lbs could be an impact player for the Lions from the tackle position. Payne has the potential to be a dominant run and pass blocker this season. Another player to keep an eye on for the Lions is Brady Moorman. Moorman is an exciting wide receiver that has excellent hands and can be dangerous in the open field. I would not expect the Gravette offense to have problems getting in the end zone they have been very solid over the years.

The defensive side of the ball has several solid players. Bret Callahan will occupy one of the linebacker positions. Callahan had an excellent season in 2015 racking up 77 tackles and getting to the opposing quarterback four times. Gravette fans should look for Drew Hendren at defensive end to continue to be a disruptive presence on the defensive side of the ball for the Lions. Hendren amassed 70 tackles of his own last season and has the potential to have an even bigger year this season.

The Gravette Lions are a team that are used to being the underdog. Overlooking the Lions is a mistake in 2016. Gravette may be a young team but they have the talent to make another push for the playoffs and to possibly even make a run at a 1-4 A-Conference title. I expect coach Harrelson to keep the momentum going and rack up enough wins for a playoff spot and they might even make a playoff run. In any event, Gravette Lions’ fans have a lot to look forward to in the coming season.
