’17 Season Preview: Russellville Cyclones

The Russellville Cyclones are coming off the best season in school history. The Cyclones won the 6-A State Championship after defeating Greenwood. From there the offseason took an interesting turn with Coach Billy Dawson taking the Fayetteville job and the Cyclones bringing in Jeff Weaver from Little Rock Christian to take over the Cyclones. The 2017 season should be an interesting one for the Cyclones.

The Cyclones’ offense will be breaking in a new quarterback but will still have some experience spread out over the offense. Russellville will have Josiah Woodard returning and he can line up at either the wide receiver or running back positions. Woodard rushed for over 650 yards and nine touchdowns and caught 11 passes for 80 yards last season. Woodard can stretch the field and is exactly what the Cyclones need in order to reach the playoffs once again.

The defense for Russellville was an impressive unit a season ago. Russellville only allowed 23 points per game and have several returning starters coming back to lead the defense this season. Cyclones’ fans can look for Rasheed Robinson to lock down the defensive front this season. Robinson has impressive speed and solid size to play the defensive tackle position. The Cyclones have the potential to be a dangerous defensive team.

Russellville has plenty of potential to challenge for a playoff spot and make a playoff run. Adjusting to the new coaches, could prove interesting for the Cyclones. I expect Russellville to make the playoffs once again, but how far they go will be based on how well they do during the course of the season.
